Candidate Profile: Detlef Eckert

detlefe@microsoft.com
Senior Director, Trustworthy Computing

In December 2002, Detlef Eckert joined Microsoft as Senior Director responsible for the implementation of the Trustworthy Computing (TWC) initiative in Europe, Middle East and Africa. The initiative aims to make Microsoft an industry leader in IT security, privacy, reliability and business integrity. Trustworthy Computing means helping ensure that a safe and reliable computing experience is both expected and taken for granted.

Before joining Microsoft, Detlef worked at the European Commission. As Head of Division responsible for analysis and policy planning in the Directorate General Information Society, he launched a number of key policy initiatives that contributed to the full liberalisation of the European telecommunications markets in 1998.

He was also responsible for a new network and information security policy at EU level that led to the e-signature Directive, a reformed export control regime for crypto products, a drive to increase security across the EU, and a Commission proposal to create a cyber security agency.

Other activities included the launch of the eEurope2002 and 2005 Action Plan, the basis for the EU’s new economy strategy. This is now an essential part of the Lisbon objective, which aims to make the EU the most competitive region in the world by 2010.

Born in Germany in 1953, Detlef graduated from the University of Siegen with a degree in Economics. He also obtained a Doctorate in Economics from the same university where he was assistant professor from 1979 until 1985. After his university career, he joined the Bremen Ministry for Economic Affairs and Technology where he worked in the field of technology and regional policy. Detlef speaks German, English, and French.
